On June 1 & 2, 2002, Metro Amateur Radio Club (MAC) and the Pisa Amateur
Radio Club will participate in a joint venture of International
significance. Niles, Illinois and Pisa, Italy are Sister Cities and in
an
effort to bring the communities a little closer, each club will set-up
and
operate amateur radio stations from their respective leaning towers.
For decades amateur radio operators have enhanced International goodwill
utilizing wireless communication. This event continues the tradition by
drawing attention to two communities thousands of miles apart with
something
very special in common. The Pisa club will locate at the legendary
Leaning
Tower of Pisa, while the MAC group operates from Americas Leaning Tower
in
Niles, Illinois.
Using both voice and Morse code, ham operators around the world will try
to
contact both towers in order to win a special Pisan Tower Award. MAC
secretary, and event organizer, Mike Dinelli: We anticipate making
contact
with over 2,000 radio amateurs worldwide during this event.
Interested parties can obtain the latest information about the event by
visiting the MAC website at http://www.qsl.net/mac
