Tonight's planned launch of a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Vandenberg AFB appears to be on schedule. The massive rocket is scheduled to lift off from south base at 8:06 p.m. PST and place a classified payload into orbit for the National Reconnaissance Office. The rocket's direction of flight will probably be generally from north to south.
If the sky is clear, the early portion of the launch could be visible to the unaided eye from as far away as Santa Rosa and Sacramento Calif.; Lake Tahoe; Las Vegas; Phoenix; and Hermosillo and northern Baja California, Mexico. To see the launch from outlying areas, you will need an unobstructed horizon and a good idea of exactly where to look.
Although the Delta IV Heavy is a huge rocket, its size does not necessarily translate into an impressive visual display. The launch could be visually interesting, but not spectacular.
