					WELCOME

The number of addresses on this newsletter's mailing list has
increased from approximately 750 to 1,200 during the past three
months. This is due in no small part to the impressive Vandenberg dusk
missile launches in September and October and this week's article on
Vandenberg launches in the San Jose Mercury News. With so many new
subscribers, I thought that a description of this newsletter is in
order.

Subject Matter

Astronomy/Space Alert for Southern California (also known as Launch
Alert) deals primarily with missile launches from Vandenberg AFB and
astronomical events.

Geographic Coverage

This newsletter concentrates on astronomy- and space-related events
of interest to the southern third of California. Major events(such as
conferences, star parties, etc.) in outlying areas are sometimes
mentioned. "Outlying areas" refers to Arizona, southwestern Utah,
southern Nevada, and northern California.

Posting Messages

The only people who can distribute messages to this newsgroup are the
editor (me) and the newsgroup server system administrator. If you have
material that you would like to be included in this newsletter, e-mail
it directly to me at [email protected].

Comments

If you have any comments regarding an issue of this newsletter, do not
press the Reply button on your e-mail tool. Instead, send your
comments directly to [email protected].

Cost

Astronomy/Space Alert for Southern California is free. Al Waller,
K3TKJ, a fellow ham operator in Delaware graciously provides the
newsgroup server and server maintenance at no cost.

As a matter of fact, he hosts, at his own expense, over 550 other
e-mail newsgroups. Earlier this year, Al upgraded his servers and
installed new software to combat spam, viruses, and the harvesting
of mailing list addresses. These upgrades set him back about $10,000.

>From time to time you'll receive an e-mail message from Al that
includes a request for your financial support. I urge you to donate
a couple of dollars each year to keep his operation going.
