The reflectors left on the moon are large and precise. However, with the very high power and tightly collimated lasers available to NASA, and state of the art aiming systems (laser ranging stations, space observatory class), they have many misses. The FOV's are very narrow, so narrow in fact that the Moon has to be tracked, the RX has to be moved properly after the pulse is sent. For each pulse, only a few photons, or a few 10's of photons are received back. And, the Moon is never completely dark, optics aren't perfect....so the ambient light is QRM. Libration is a factor, which is unavoidable. Regards, Art On 1/1/19 9:46 AM, Joe wrote: > Yup, > But very very quiet. > > A Question. We don't really need to be 'completely' successful but learn in the process. Those Sot boards and processing chips are VERY inexpensive and so much more sensitive than the electronics of the past. Dunno' it's just a thought. BTW those little car back-up cameras in the IR region work great for detection, yes I have one, lots of fun and cheap too. Oh, and happy the list has come alive again.
