That's a good question.  When I was part of a working group experimenting
with them a couple of years back we were using laser diodes sourced from Ali
Baba and some fairly high-quality photodetectors.  We got voice mostly
working but no data mode we tried over laser worked.  Granted, our
experimental environment was a distance of about ten feet across one of the
workshops at a hackerspace...
