I've just put some notes up on my website regarding my recently built optical (625 nm-ish) transceiver.  Click on the "Experiments on an LED-Based Optical Transceiver" link at

Keep in mind that this rig was designed not with great dx in mind but rather ease of pointing and quick setup of a Morse QSO over up to a few km combined with very low eye-safety and driver-distraction risk.  It had a secondary purpose of experimenting with a low power LED as a detector.  

I had my 1st QSO with it on August 19 over a 1.4 km path with VE3KH and VE3RKS at the other end.
