I figured after a year it was time to post it even if it's still just a rough draft. Lots more math than i expected...
but as you say - There is quite a bit of difference between lunar ranging with a small retroreflector and the
detection of a coherent signal from a larger area. Like comparing Apples and Oranges.
Ultimately there is a signal to noise ratio to be had here. It seems to me to be much better than you might
expect when comparing it with ranging. One photon in 30 million Vs. A one percent modulation of
a 600 watt background source.
