Laserlight is normally linear polarized. A lamdda/4 waveplate for the
desired wavelenght transforms it to circular polarized beam. The white
light of the sky is partially linear polarized an it is possible to
transform it using special components (not whith waveplate).
The most emitter of white light are unpolarized. That means each
direction polarisation is in statistical distribution inside the beam.
Reflection of such a beam on nonmetallic surfaces produces partially up
to totally linear polarized light.

Aside from theoretically losing 50% by filtering, is there a direct
method of producing compact intense circularly (or, less desirably,
linearly) polarized "white" light?
