By night to adjust an infrared laser link we used twosmall IR cameras mechanically fixed to the lasers frames.
These cameras have been first modified with new bigger objectives to be moresensitive.
Each camera is connected to a video monitor.
We first beam the lasers on a far away clear target (to avoid parallax) and we mark thelaser spots pictures on the screens with a pencil.
Next step, each station uses powerful lamps as beacons.
If you beam the receivers with classical device system (reticle on optical device) to the beacons, the RX aimingis done.
If you beam the laser so that the beacon pictures are on the pencil marks, on the video monitors, theTX aiming is done.
You can have more details about the way to aim a NLOS infrared com at the end of this presentation :

I have yet to figure out how someone aligns an IR system over a long
path like over 10 km or more. How do you guys do it?
