WOW! What an answer! Thank you for the info "download." I will have to read it in detail but I just wanted to show my appreciation to you for typing all that lot.

Fortunately there are a couple of people relatively local to me (including one in the same town) who have built optical communications equipment for amateur use so I can pick their brains too.

Now I shall go away and do a lot of reading and re-reading....
