[Laser] LED used as APD

LEDs can sometimes be used like photodiodes with a selective response just under their nominal light frequency BW. 
Now it is found that the photocurrent can be greatly enhanced by operating the LEDs biased just below the reverse bias breakdown threshold !!!

These LEDs needs hundreds of volts in reverse mode through a high value limiting resistor.
Is there somebody who did some experiments with GaP or GaAsP/GaP Light-emitting diodes used in APD mode to build optical receiver ?
