Consider for a moment, what your situation would be if you sat down
in the center of a mid to high latitude grid square. These are close
to being 60 miles x 60 miles in size. Thus, after you've worked your
own square, you have an additional four grid squares to the north,
south, east and west that are only 30 miles away, for a total of
five. You also have a additional four squares, NW, NE, SE and SW that
are within 43 miles. Thus you have, in addition to the square you are
in, a total of eight squares to choose from. Depending on the
topography, one of the more distant (ie. 43 miles) squares might fill
in for a closer square that has a poor path.

Likewise, if you choose a more northerly square, it will be smaller,
perhaps significantly smaller, that 30 miles in the east-west
direction. The extreme case of this, of coarse (sic), is at the north
pole (say hello to Santa!) where you will have a total of 180 grid
squares to choose from in the space of a few feet. In fact, it might
be a challenge to determine exactly which of these 180 squares you
are physically in!
