hi Les, 
One simple mod for the ramsey kit, that might improve performance at night, is the addition of a weak variable "bias" LED to illuminate the phototransistor. This is adjusted so that you can hear a slight "hiss" rise above the noise floor in total darkness. I don't have a ramsey kit to experiment with but i was thinking the phototransistor might suffer the same kind of "night blindness" as I've seen it in other circuits.
