I know ... not really necessary discussion, but an interesting thread 
anyway.  I originally used a "low-tech" method ... a modified muffin fan on 
a HeNe tube and a morse code key with a thick bent wire on it that blocked 
the laser beam ... yes, it had some problems with staying "aimed" during 
keying.  That's why it was eventually replaced with a "relay"/solenoid 
shutter driven by the key, which was now separate from the laser assembly. 
I think I have the core of that around here somewhere ...
