What was your yellow sodium spectrum  line bandwidth filter ?
With a good one the light level behind the filter  must be very weak.
During this occurence the main city light sources view  from the moon was not 
aligned near the earth limb.
It seems to me  this gives a very strong light modulation cancellation by the 
earth  curvature.
I am waiting for your comments with a great interest.
