Hello,
After some work, I have gotten a web page describing the 1963, 118+ mile
one-way laser communication online. It may be found here:
http://modulatedlight.org/eos/Operation_Red_Line.html
This feat was completed only months after the first visible-wavelength
HeNe lasers were developed with the help of a lot of volunteer and
collaborative effort, drawing on the skills many people. This web page
includes a transcribed narrative provided by Bob Legg, W6QYY, audio
clips from the original 1963 log tapes, and quite a few photographs that
I scanned during a recent visit to Bob's QTH in California, along with
detailed annotation containing information provided by Bob and a few of
the other participants.
During this recent visit, Bob, Chris (VK3AML) and myself completed an
impromptu 2-way optical QSO across the valley: At just under 8 miles,
it didn't break any DX records (the distance was so short that the
receivers were driven into partial saturation when the optical
transmitters were running at full power) but we all had great fun doing
this: Pictures and audio from this QSO will be placed online soon.
73,
Clint
