Yes, I have seen these too. I opened up several CD burners and out of
the lot there was one with that type of diode/sensor and the rest had
discrete diodes.

The one I found was sort of like the diode cases but oblong,and it had I
believe 10 pins on it, appeared to be 8 on each side and 1 pin on each
narrow end.
