It is possible for this experiment a high optical gain is not useful  because 
the moon light background / useful signal ratio is probably rather  constant 
versus the telescope diameter.
The sensitivity improvement is mainly  a bandwidth question.
Sodium spectrum lines allow a very selective optical  device.  
As write Art KY1K, a simple photomultiplier without optic  could be 
sufficient to detect the signal during a total moon eclipse.
