I had found some of those hunting through the
archives.  Many of the PDB- models are available from
Digi-Key....but most are huge area diodes with
correspondingly huge capacitances.  I am still trying
to get my head around operating a circuit with a
bandwidth of a few Hz at 500 Hz !  The BPW34 is
available from Mouser...I'm contemplating acquiring a
batch for the various locals who are interested.  It
seems quite popular in Europe.

I am currently using an audio CD-player detector...if
someone wants a data sheet for this sort of thing it
appears to be at least similar to the Hamamatsu S6795.
