[Laser] Preferred detectors ?

I want to start on a second transceiver and there seem
to be a few locals interested in getting laser gear
going too.  So rather than taking apart another
CD-player, what are your preferences in PIN
photodiodes and where can they be obtained in North
America ? (not counting integrated detector/preamps
like the OPT-101 for the moment)
