Steve, 
With  magnitude - 0,04 Arcturus is a very bright star !  
You  can also detect low magnitude stars simply if you use Spectran on  a PC. 
It  is because most of the "twinkling" noise spectrum is in the very low  
frequencies (5 to 70 Hz) and these frequencies are very difficult to hear at low  
level. 
With  Spectran with 0,17 Hz resolution and from 0 to 100 Hz scale, you could 
see a  kind of white cloud on the waterfall picture may be on a 4th magnitude  
star. 
With  a 40 cm x 40 cm Fresnel lens one can detect a 6 magnitude star with  
Spectran and a good K3PGP RX.
