Tim - The location of the beacon is to the South of all areas of interest 
so fortunately we only need maybe 45-60 degrees max azimuth to be covered. 
I'v'e been thinking exactly as you mentioned for an array of photo 
detectors with maybe no or minimal optics. I do want to experiment though 
with sandwiching the detectors between a pair of mirrors in a form of 
corner reflector to reduce the vertical BW if possible.
