If you want something to do short range on a budget, use a
phototransistor from any photointerruptor. They are free, but don't
expect any long range reception with them. They will not respond to
visible light well unless the phototransistor is in a clear plastic
package however.
For a much more sensitive receiver, spend 3 dollars for an OPT-101 or
5 dollars for an OPT-301 (ebay prices). These are integrated
photodiode/amplifier and draw less than 300 ua of supply current.
They are well worth the money, the OPT-301 is preferred as it comes
in a shielded can, greatly simplifying the construction. They are
easy to use, very sensitive and sensitivity is very reproducible from
unit to unit.
I'll send spec sheets for both to you via direct mail.
Keep dem laser lit and welcome to the group.
