[Laser] Looking for advice

The instruction book says one quarter mile.  I presume that is with no  
additional optics.  I have never tried that far with mine.  Others  report several 
Km ( or was it miles?) with some lenses.
 
I mounted mine in 2 inch schedule 40 PVC plastic pipe.  I also  modified the 
power switch to pull on rather than push on.  I have since  stoped using 
internal batteries so I no longer worry about accidentally turning  them on and 
running the battery down.  
 
I do not like the way the laser pointer is mounted, and recommend the  
receiver photo transistor be mounted separately from the PC board and run coax  or 
shielded wire.
 
I also found that the units do not like for you to talk within one inch of  
the electret microphone.  In a gymnasium, the increaed gain of the  automatic 
level control will pick up an amazing amount of sound.
 
I love mine.
