That is a very interesting circuit.  Have you tried it
?

It appears to give about the same bandwidth as I have,
but probably with substantially better weak-signal
sensitivity since it doesn't need the 66 Megohm FET
bias resistor that my current AC-coupled circuit has. 
I imagine it will probably saturate in daylight,
however, since it is DC-coupled. One of my goals is to
be able to cover at least 1 km in the daytime as well
as at night, with a low power laser spread to a wide
beamwidth.
