There is also a good tutorial (now out of print) by SPIE
TT10 (tutorial 10) "laser propagation through the atmosphere" (I think)
It may be available at some technical libraries.

The concept of interference cells (your bubbles)is thoroughly discussed.
4"-6" is the "typical" size from what I remember.
