Dear folks,
One of the earliest optical contacts I conducted with amateur ops involved
was between the shacks of VK3ASE and VK3BEK in mid-1975, about 2.5 km using
a modulated neon lamp in an old traffic light parabolic reflector at one end
and a 931A photomult behind a 5 inch magnifying lens at the other. A
five-minute audio grab of that contact is at:

Another contact, from about March 1976 with VK3AML on 160 metres, VK3 ZGJ on
2 metres and me on a modulated mercury arc light beam with ZGJ receiving on
a PM and 5" lens is available as an audio grab on:
http://www.bluehaze.com.au:8080/ramgen/egg_long_lightbeam_excerpt_1974_death.rm
So amateurs DO have contacts with unlicensed people on light beam, in spite
of all...
...and I thought you were all such law-abiding chappies!
Have fun!
Chris Long (Melbourne, Australia)
