Tims's idea looks good. I played with
flash tubes, like the ones used in
stobes years ago. It is quite easy
to increase the pulse rate by putting
a smaller capacitor and more powerful,
stable power supply. However, when the
pulse energy goes below a certain limit,
the plasma discharge does no more fill
the whole tube, but becomes thing stream
like miniature lightning bolt.

Here's an idea I had about using strobe lights
to communicate. It's probably not completely new
since these things have been around so long. I
know several on the list have mentioned using
PSK via laser over the last year and how it lends
itself well to square waves.
