There are reservations about exactly what constitutes a record. For
speech, I think it remains at 118 miles, set by W6POP of the
Electro-Optics Systems Radio Club with a HeNe laser back in May 1963.
That was done across the Mojave desert in California - see my web site
for more:

All of the longer distances covered in, for instance, the 1991 records
were set with either MCW or digital techniques. At least, I think so
... unless someone has evidence to the contrary...
Diode lasers were reasonably affordable in 1991, but yes, HeCd lasers
were used because their blue-violet output matches the wavelength
range of spectral sensitivity for photomultipliers.
In Australia, the speech DX record remains at 104 miles (167.7 km) set
by VK7MJ, VK7JG and myself in February of this year. It's a bit wet
and cold here during the Australian Winter, but we hope for even
better this coming Spring. We have already lined up an optical path of
205 km, just have to wait for the snow to thaw out on Mount Buffalo to
try it.
Chris Long, Melbourne Australia (and Dave Smith VK3HZ).
