[Laser] Photo detectors: Short Course

Hey Stan,

Never used a rifle scope as receive optics, for aiming only, but if I am reading your question correctly, there should be very little loss as the reticle occupies very little area in the scope view. The detector will have to be locate at a distance behind the scope, somewhere near the "eye relief" of the scope. I have always used Convex or Plano-Convex lenses mounted in a pvc or aluminum tube.

I make the focal distance to the detector variable. the reason being that at the focal point the RX FOV or beamwidth might be in the area of 1 degree. By pushing the detector forward into the "cone of light" the gain of the optical system goes down, but will be a lot easier to point. Once you acquire the signal you can adjust focal point for best SNR.

Thank for the great detector info.. If you want can send pixs of the system I built using an 8" dou-convex in a PVC pipe.

Hello the Net:

I just completed a very short course on photo detectors held by our
local chapter of the IEEE.
A decent perspective for the academic or the R&D person.

for this short course, go to: http://ultra.bu.edu/leos

and drag back the .PDF files.

Issue #2:

If I am using the optics of a rifle scope, how much blockage of the
distant signal will occur with the reticle,
either cross hairs or mill dot or whatever ?
