Hi Al,

2.3 volts is too low to make any current flow in the laser.

If you are trying to run the laser on the small batteries that came with
the laser, then you need to stop. Those batteries may power your laser for
awhile, but they don't have much capacity.

The 9 volt battery with the dropping resistors is the same situation,
inadequate current supplied for more than a few minutes of laser power.

With 3 C or D batteries, you should be able to power your pointer for quite
awhile.

Also, before throwing the lasers in the trash, you might try powering them
with the C or D cell batteries as explained above. The lasers might no be
burned out at all, they might just be suffering from low voltage input.

I do have one other thought, although it's a long shot. You mentioned your
air is clear and very dry there. I'm wondering if static could have damaged
your lasers (they are an open circuit with only a single resistor and an
open switch so they could easily be damaged by static).

A 1 to 10 meg ohm resistor could be placed across the laser diode (in
parallel) to prevent static from building up due to your dry climate.

Hope this helps. Please let us know when you get your VUCC on laser. Sounds
like you can do it with the improved Ramsey's.
