PS: Before giving up on the laser that runs dim after a few minutes, you 
might want to check the value of the internal current limiting resistor.
If 
they used a low power resistor, it might  have changed value due to the 
long transmissions you made with the Ramsey kits.

One of the common problems with the ramsey hook up is the method
to operate the pointer switch. This is a cheeeeeep thing to begin with
and
I had problems in keeping it operated. It would do anything from
go high ohms to alltogether open

so the problem may not be with the diode

My problem with the ramsey kit was a funky dot from the diode,, an e mail
to them
and they sent me another pointer which was a little better . The dot had
a halo that
surrounded the main dot.. most odd
