I normally don't comment on these messages, but this on has inspired me.

While the PGP front end is a fine design and performs as well as any other
discreet front end, I see little use for the design unless one has all/most
of the parts in their junkbox already!

While considering the PGP front end, I hope you will all consider the
Burr-Brown opt-101a integrated solution. It is a very low noise amp and
medium area photodiode (.09 inch by .09 inch active area) that peaks at 850
nm. It has a built in 1 meg ohm feedback resistor, which gives 14khz
bandwidth and is usable with other resistors to archive bandwidths as
narrow as 2 hz. It comes in a t-05 package hermetically sealed package,
which is shielded and is nearly turn key. Add +/- power supplies (150 ua)
and you're off and running with known sensitivity and bandwidth!

Yes, they are pricey.....at around $16 dollars each. But, when compared to
the time involved in assembly of the pgp front end, I think the money spent
for the burr-brown chip is well worth the cost and it makes for a nice
small and compact receiver, which adds to portability of the station.

If $16 is too much money to spend for a laser receiver chip, please
consider buying them on ebay. They have been showing up there for 3/$10.
(starting prices) and most of the auctions have closed for less than $12.

Below is the current auction, which will end in 3 days.

I'll email a spec sheet to anyone who doesn't have it. Email me OFF LIST
please.

Regards,

Art
