I looked at those, but aren't most CD lasers infrared?  While 
it's possible to use infrared for laser communications, it can
make aiming difficult (although some camcorders will pickup and 
display infrared, at least, near infrared).  I think that DVD
lasers are visible (blue-green?), but these state that they're
for CDs, which are most likely infrared.

Additionally, I'm a little concerned about the optics.  
Typically, CD lasers are designed to focus to a point a short
distance away from the laser, which is exactly what you don't
want for a long distance laser communications system.  However,
it may be possible to pull the focusing lens off.

optical moduals are about one inch wide and are designed to be used in laser disc 
storage.I have no specs for tehse units but each one consists of a diode
laser, a focus lens, autofocus and tracking assemblies.  These units are
brand new, but untested.
