Dear Group,
Learn to evaluate reflectors:
A) Find a flashlight reflector and remove the lamp.
B) Now... while looking into the reflector from a "coaxial"
or right in front with one eye.... SLOWLY bring a contrasting and
symmetrical object, such as the eraser of a pencil or the head of a Round
Match into the reflector from the rear. The idea is to mimic the filament
or light source of the lamp the reflector was designed for. This is why
you want a round and contrasting object.
C) At some point, with a little practice and common sense
you will find the image of JUST the eraser or match head "fills" or is
imaged by the WHOLE reflector.
D) Soon you should be able to pick up nearly ANY potential
reflector, a new Wok or a Stainless Steel salad bowl at a Goodwill
or surplus store or variety store and look down into it from a moderate
distance, and poke your finger-tip toward the focal point..... and look
for the big reward, you finger is evenly magnified to fill the whole thing
at one location.
E) A variation of this can be done with the sun, but learning
to do this as a "you have all the tools at hand" skill permits the
locating of good low cost reflectors ... and even free ones ... from many
sources.
