We are all well aware that "free space" communications probably dates back
to prehistoric man, when "smoke signals" were transmitted using a fire and
intermittently covered and uncovered with a buffalo hide. What I am
referring to, is the practical deployment of a system at very high data
rates, available for use by the general public,
free from the proprietary control of large capitalists and the extortion,
taxing governments. Such a system should be constructable by your average
Steven Jobs, back yard experimenter, using readily obtainable parts from a
local hardware store or Radio Shack. Is this asking too much? If so, what
has happened to America's inventive genius, the likes of Thomas Edison and
Nicola Tesla?
