I would also think that selecting laser diodes with a large difference
between Ith and Iop would give you more "play"--with the PGP driver you
could then bias it to to about 1/2 output and roll the dice. That's
something I'm considering with these $20 120mw IR diodes from
digikey...I won't feel *too* bad if I nuke one anyway. These
current-to-output curves are usually very non-linear, but it might give
you some headroom. For those of us thinking of using these things in
the middle of January it is going to be something to be concerned about.
