Acousto-Optic Modulator were discovered long ago and were used for light
intensity modulation and switching. Generally piezo devices are used for
faster modulation and for pressing the optical fiber a bit. Mono mode light
generally modulated as it stops if the path is narow than for permitted
wavelength. It acts like a switch.

Light reaches to us from sun and stars so is the greatest way to
communicate. Only we need power and ideas.
