[Laser] Slightly OT, may the qth.net Gods cause my underwear to itch...

I have a PIR sensor monitoring an entry way.  It often falses due to
bunnies, birds, lightning, dustclouds and tornados.

How does the sensor in these work?  It is a sort of switch?  If I short the
two pins together will it cause the sensor to trip?  Will it cause damage?
I am thinking in this case I would be better with a magnetic loop
underground to activate this sensor.  I am in the experimental stage, and
want to use this unit for starters since the TX/RX codes match, keeping
things simple for now.  Well, that and the fact that I already have a
functioing pair...

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
