I am thinking that the metal tube is resonant neat 700 mhz or so and could
be treated as a quarter wave 'cavity' to excite with external RF thus
modulating the gas and possibly with the help of a higher powered laser
pointed into the tube with modulation.
Gonna find out real soon as the snow is flying...
