I just have never come up with a slick way to modulate a HeNe.
Tried again recently at work where getting 4 to 5 percent amplitude
fluctuations at a sub-Hz rate from common HeNes - this causes
great annoyance using a HeNe to do some special detector
responsivity measurements. Tried (again) wrapping laser with
a coil, just not enough of an effect to counter the slow
fluctuations. Gave up & bought a 633nm diode laser - almost
rock stable. A stabilized HeNe is like $5000.
Tell me about what you're doing with "external fields."
Enjoyed your Fessenden link - had never heard of the guy.
