As the active area increases, so does the Dark Current (Id)
and the capacitance.  For 800 Hz BW I doubt you would have
problems with the capacitance slowing things down (especially
if you bias ther detector) and the Dark Current might have to
be pretty bad to notice.  I feel the most important factor is
that you use an active area large enough to capture all of
the available signal - like several mm in area.  Hopefully you
will see an improvement over the phototransistor, which almost
always have a very tiny active area and are relatively slow.
