For a given diode size, I would think that running in photoconductive mode 
and adjusting the bias on the diode will give you higher and more controlled 
bandwidth.  Others will know better than I.  

I think that in photovoltaic mode you can adjust the imput impedance on the 
diode amplifier - the same effect as parallel resistance, of course the cost 
for this bandwidth is higher noise.  Check the K3PGP daytime frontend for 
some ideas on that....

I'd be interested to see what people are doing in the area of broadband 
frontends good to VHF or above.
