[Laser] 20 miles, 100 miles, and 1000 miles etc

Dear Friends

We oftem see horizon under 10 miles. When you talk of long distances, that
means Everest to Everest. Most of the people don't live there. What exactly
it refers too. Perhaps I can understand earth to moon but laser to 100km NO.
Can some one explain aboit it?
