I got this from a different reflector, put wanted to
pass the word on to you.
In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, I was
volunteering as a net control operator for the
Louisiana Baptist Convention, coordinating
communications for numerous Baptist feeding units and
other Disaster Relief operations in southern
Louisiana.
WinLink 2000 was instrumental for one of our units to
get email messages back to me in Alexandria, from the
communications deficient area around Slidell. I
wished that all the other units had this capability.
Another unit had email via Starband which worked well,
too.
Text messaging was so much better than voice, due to
not only terrible band conditions and zero non-radio
communications, but because of the nature of the
traffic, having good copy on census, counts,
inventories and needs was critical.
I think anyone interested in DR communcations should
make strong efforts to be text-messaging equipped.
This following email is a great jump-starter for those
who have not gotten into WinLink 2000 yet. It
includes not only includes text messaging by Ham
bands, but also allows for accurate position reporting
integration with APRS.
