The moral of the story is to NEVER get any moisture anywhere near the dials on any boat anchor equipment.  About the only way to even try to clean a dial is with a soft, clean, paint brush and apply VERY lightly.  If you are really "brave", you can use a very soft, clean, cloth and VERY GENTLY "dab" the surface of the dial.  But, be extremely careful not to wipe the lettering from the surface.
