I was using a Lafayette HE-73 Precon. This is an unusual boatanchor which 
could be used as a converter to bring the higher HF bands down in frequency. 
Inexpensive receiver performance is better at these frequencies. It also could be 
used as just a preselector (rf amp). This is how I used it with the HR-10. It 
really makes a difference. There are other amps which are good for the 
purpose, such as the Ameco nuvistor preamp.
