Looks like our neighbors to the north have solved our KEN's QRM issue on
3.993.5 MHz for us. A few months back one of my 9 land friends said
they had heard it was some type of encrypted traffic.
They have since ID'ed it as Digital Radio Mondiale http://www.drm.org/ .
The DRM signal fits into a bandwidth of about 10 kHz (against about 3
kHz for SSB phone), there is also a wide version that spreads over 20
kHz and a narrowband version 5 kHz wide, the wider offering the best
audio fidelity. DRM uses the COFDM (Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division
Multiplex) modulation.
Good news for SW broadcasters I guess, but BAD NEWS for anyone trying to
communicate around them. Not sure what we will do as yet. Moving the
net would be nice, but finding someplace not in use is a problem.
Indiana, I am told is attempting to move their once a week RACES net
below 3.990, I wish them luck.
