[KYHAM] Earthquakes, storms, and KYHAM

KyHam has served as a general ham and EMCOMM Listserv for many years
now. I realize that some probably wonder WHY we post things about
earthquakes, KyARES Alerts for Severe Weather etc on here and I agree
with Pat's assessment below. Public Service is a clearly defied role of
amateur radio I the FCC Rules under Part 97. However...
To make things a little more clearly defined between those who WANT
certain info versus those who do not, we are opening the listserv,
KyARES or http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KyARES/ . This Yahoo Group is
for use by membership of the ARES, RACES, Skywarn, and MARS programs.
If you are interested in seeing posts discussing EMCOMM issues, Pat and
I invite you to join this group.
In the future, KyARES Alerts and other such advisories will be listed
only on that server as opposed to the KyHam Listserv. The monthly Ky
Emergency Net Resources from our 1st net of the month and the Training
segment from our 2nd net each month will continue to appear here to keep
this info available openly to everyone so if you get more than one copy,
you are probably on both. Should things get deep, advisories and
emergency info MAY be posted to KyHam to inform the general ham
community as needed.
This move is not response directly to the thread of recent days, but has
been more in line with expansion plans we have had in the works for a
good while.
If ERMCOMM is your thing, by all means sign up for the KyARES List, if
not, we hope that this move will make KyHam Listserv more agreeable to
those with little or no interest in emergency response via amateur
radio.

Just my $.02 for what it is worth.
Whether it is information about severe weather, earthquakes, or whatever
type
of disaster it is welcome here within reason. KYHAM is open to anything
related to amateur radio in Kentucky. Sure, the fact there was an
earthquake,
there is severe weather approaching the state has nothing to do with
amateur
radio. However, it a lot to do with amateur radio public service.
Whether it
is ARES/RACES/Skywarn/Whatever, that information may be very useful to
their
response.
I subscribe to a lot of email notification services. Most of them
arrive, I
glance at them, and they fall into the "duly noted" category and I move
on.
You would be surprised how many earthquakes occur in the New Madrid
area. Most
aren't of the strength for us to perceive them. But I have seen a half
dozen a
day sometimes.
What does "within reason" mean? I really don't want to adopt a policy
on this
because hazards come at unexpected times/sizes/severities. The people
that
normally post information may not be online, so if there is something of
general KY interest, feel welcome to post it.
I think the best way to go about it is put specific information in the
subject
line and then within the email give a link to an official source and let
the
reader pursue it if they choose to. Let's not add any interpretation to
it
unless you are an expert. :) There are a few members of this list who
are,
and they work for the agencies that would issue the hazard
notifications. :)
We also need to remember that KYHAM and the Internet is an ever changing
environment. There are people joining all the time. They discover
something
they have never seen before and want to share it with others because
they think
it is useful. They may not know that some they send it to are already
aware of
that particular site or piece of information. Do you know how joke
emails
travel around? You may have seen it, but when one of your friends sees
it and
sends it to you, you get it again. Same concept.
Just my thoughts...
