When I observe the obstacles now facing amateur radio operations I am
reminded of Arthur C. Clarke's RAMA series of books. As well, I am reminded
of boiling frogs.
The story portrayed in the series is somewhat epic in its span. The
conclusion of the tale takes place in a somewhat movie theater-like realm.
A history of the universe is displayed in time-lapse for the heroine. Both
the forces of nature and the currents of civilizations are played out in a
manner not unlike those found in the great stellar views that span galaxies
and more.
What particularly sticks out in my memory of that revelation was a
civilization that grew and expanded through great periods of time and vast
reaches of space. It grew to be a great and expansive bright area within
the display. Eventually the civilization dimmed and faded from the
universe. In a bit of a twist on the WAR OF THE WORLDS theme, it seems this
great civilization had forgotten an important factor that allowed them to
grow and become such a far-flung power. Through eons of evolution the
genetic makeup of these once great beings had become homogenized. The genes
that had been the foundation that propelled them to great mastery of much of
the universe no longer contained the great variety of differences and
permeations that allowed them to thrive.
As human activities converge on amateur radio and perhaps stir the notions
of limiting, diminishing or eliminating it, I suspect the powers-that-be
would do well to consider the attributes that constitute the foundation of
modern communications.
